Shar Pei: Expect Health Issues

Finding the perfect breed of dog is something that will prove to be futile because there are few, if any such cases, and thus you should be prepared to deal with health problems in your pet, regardless of its breed. There no doubts the fact that Chinese Shar Pei health problems are major causes for concern to pet owners, who also need to ensure proper care if they don’t want to spend a lot of money treating their pets whenever they become ill.

Whenever you notice that there are Shar Pei health problems that are bringing your pet’s condition down, you need to list the area of the body that is being affected and then inform your vet about it immediately. This will help the vet diagnose the problem better and thus be able to recommend a proper treatment method based on an accurate diagnosis. Still, the good news is that most Shar Pei health problems are known to affect just a small proportion of the entire breed.
Sometimes, a particular Shar Pei may be suffering from many health problems and in such instances, to prevent future lines of Shar Peis also being adversely affected, it may be best if animals that are severely hampered by health problems not being bred any further. This will ensure that future generations of Shar Peis will not suffer from unwanted Shar Pei health problems. And to make absolutely sure that the Shar Pei puppy that you are thinking of buying is free from health problems, you should get the breeder to show you that its parents have been checked and also cleared of possible health problems.

The first action that you need to take with regard to Shar Pei health problems is to determine whether your Shar Pei has Entropion, that is a disease that is also found in a dozen or so other breeds. The first indication that this disease affects your pet is that the pet will have eye tacking. Another common health problem with this breed is cherry eye that is a protrusion of a third eye, while another affliction that can strike your pet because of lack of proper Shar Pei care is hypothyroidism.
Shar Pei health problems are something that is a cause for concern for most owners, and among other things, the breed could easily be affected by cancer as well as becoming allergic. This requires that owners give Shar Pei care a lot of thought, since only proper care can actually prevent a number of health problems including skin problems that are most often caused by fleas and which can easily be prevented.

On the flip side is the fact that Shar Peis are breeds that only require minimal maintenance and with simple care such as brushing regularly and not even having to bathe them every week, most Shar Pei health problems can be prevented. However, unfortunately, health problems may still arise and part of the reason for this is indiscriminate breeding because of their current popularity which has thrown up many unscrupulous breeders and even puppy mills that don’t care a fig about good breeding standards or other faults in the dogs that they breed, and which offer this breed without any regard for their good health.
