Homeopathy And Your Pets
What is homeopathy? Homeopathy is a 200 year old system of medicine based on the ancient principle that like cures like. The word ‘homeopathy’ is derived from the Greek word ‘homoios’ which means ‘similar’ or ‘like’. While homeopathy has been a popular form of alternative medicine for humans for many years, it is only very recently that veterinary medicine has begun to integrate homeopathic practices and medicines into their treatment of pets.
Homeopathy differs from traditional medicine in a number of ways, but one of the most important is that, while mainstream medical practice focuses on identifying and treating disease, homeopathy focuses on maintaining good health and strengthening the immune system.
For example, when a person or an animal becomes ill or is in pain, traditional doctors or veterinarians approach the problem by prescribing a medication to kill the disease agent and/or relieve the pain, or sometimes the problem is surgically removed or treated. Often medications prescribed to treat disease have unwanted side effects, some of them as bad as or worse than the problem they are designed to treat.
By contrast, a homeopathic practitioner, when confronted will illness or pain, will find a natural substance -Homeopathy for Pets- that mimics the cause of the problem and prescribe it to stimulate the body’s natural immune system. So for example, a common homeopathic remedy for bites or bee stings is bee venom. Venoms, poisonous and toxic plants, and herbal remedies are common substances used in homeopathic treatments.
While it may sound alarming to apply bee venom for a sting, the amounts used in these treatments are not large enough to be dangerous and they certainly do not add to pain. The theory behind this practice is that a minute amount of the toxin will help stimulate the body’s natural defenses. Homeopathic practitioners look at how the body is attempting to remedy the situation on its own, and then choose treatments that will aid the body to do what it is already trying to do to heal the problem.
